Science
The Lower School Science Program at Pine Cobble School is grounded in the principles of relevance, inquiry, evidence, systems, and action. Students are guided to ask their own questions and pursue their own answers, allowing them to make their own connections between what is being explored in the classroom and what they see in real life. Through this question-driven, inquiry-based approach, children are taught how to apply the scientific method to their own investigations. Students at Pine Cobble are taught to respect evidence, and to make conclusions that fit with the data they gather. On a regular basis, children at all levels are asked to engage in logical, thoughtful reasoning and to consider the contextual systems in which things exist. The children do a range of activities, from finding the common threads woven into their day-to-day science classes, their semester long units, and their entire Lower School career, to learning to act responsibly by considering how to use their scientific knowledge in order to foster more socially and ecologically just behavior.
