- Pine Cobble School

Upper School

In grades six through nine, teachers complement traditional academic activities with hands-on learning, study skill development, interdisciplinary teaching, field trips and arts enrichment programs. Our goal is to help students exceed their expectations and ensure that each and every one is well-prepared for academics after Pine Cobble.

The curriculum is ambitious and rigorous in all subject areas. In mathematics we teach Pre-Algebra through Trigonometry, with students placed in the class that is best suited to him/her, regardless of the grade and age of the student. Students study Life, Space, and Physical Science, along with Geology, Astronomy and Biology. History begins with Ancient Civilizations and Middle Ages, moves to United States History, World Cultures, and culminates in Western Civilization. Interdisciplinary units are often taught across the curriculum. French and Latin are offered in sixth through ninth grades, with about two-thirds of our students taking both languages. The English program emphasizes reading, writing and oral communication skills; all students give a significant speech to the community before graduating. For students who need extra support, our Wilson based Reading Specialist tailors individual programs which both support the curriculum and help closed any gaps that a student might have.

Upper School students are keenly aware of their importance as role models to the younger children. Advisor groups volunteer in classrooms and/or do service projects with younger classes or with the outside community. Projects such as Pumpkin Day, the Thanksgiving Feast, and Cookie Day foster meaningful connections between Upper and lower School students.
