Field Hockey
Like our soccer program, field hockey for our girls has been a big part of our athletic program for almost a half century. In the 70’s and early 80’s, Juliet Flynt ’66, coached our girls to several undefeated seasons and was featured in “Faces in the Crowd” in Sports Illustrated. While winning has become a wonderful tradition in this program, it is not our emphasis. The friendships that are built, the sportsmanship that is learned and passed down to younger players, and the hard work that each player puts in are what make these girls proud to be part of the “Pine Cobble Ladybugs.” With 6th and 7th graders making up our junior varsity, our 8th and 9th graders comprise our varsity team. There are occasional exceptions, when 7th graders have joined the varsity program. Both teams have a six to eight game schedule, and the varsity plays in two day-long tournaments – one in Connecticut and one in Massachusetts.

Two times is a charm.
Tourney victors for second year in a row.
Way to Go Ladybugs!

Small in number but big in heart. The Pine Cobble Girls’ Field Hockey team has twenty six players to make up a Varsity and Junior Varsity squad. With eleven players on the field, you do the math….not many subs. They never seem to look tired at practice or in games - always playing their hearts out. Five of our 26 players played for both the JV and Varsity – a testament to their devotion to PC and their peers. For the ’08-’09 season our J.V. record was 2 wins and 1 tie (we had very few schools in the area with J.V. teams) and our varsity (counting tournaments) was 5 wins – 9 ties and 1 loss. For the second year in a row the varsity came away from the 12-team Bement Tournament in Deerfield with the first place crown (last year and outright win and this year a tie for first). The season ended with another tournament in Conneticut where we reached the finals and lost literally at the buzzer (1-2 loss to Dedham Country Day School). Buzzer wins and losses don’t occur too often in the sport of field hockey. All in all a great season for all 26 players.
