Our (third grade) civil engineers
This was posted on October 24, 2011

Talk about real world projects! Recently, student “civil engineers,” (the third grade, with “teacher engineer” Mrs. Garton) visited the flood-damaged, five mile stretch of Route 2.   The class had been working on designing and constructing a model community park in the classroom, so this first-hand experience at a real construction site was the perfect connection.

our third grade "engineers," after analyzing blueprints

Students viewed the blueprints for the project and discussed scale. They saw how measurement, geometry, estimation, and cost must be factored into a project of this nature. They discussed erosion, human changes to our environment, and the forces of nature.

It was a powerful way to bring classroom lessons to life.

It was just an incredible lesson that connected math, science, history, and the social sciences. The kids got a closer, more in-depth view of flood damage than most adults are able to get, and it was downright fascinating. We love these kinds of interdisciplinary projects, and we always love connecting the things we’re learning in class to the world around us. The lessons tend to mean more, and sink in more deeply. Plus, they’re just plain more fun!

Although it poured the entire time, the kids’ spirit couldn’t be dampened. Thanks to Gary Polumbo for arranging this incredible field trip!
