Hooray for our second grade, who have already visited the Williamstown Food Pantry multiple times, and who will continue to work with the organization all year long. It’s part of our character education — to go beyond mere words about respect and gratitude, and get kids out there in the community in consistent and deeply meaningful ways.
Last month, they did a linen drive with Williamstown Food Pantry for community members who lost their homes in the hurricane — they collected many carloads full of towels, blankets, sheets, and more. Today, they brought cards they’d made to the Food Pantry and spent a good deal of time preparing food packages in advance of Thanksgiving. They were there for a long time, working hard the whole time, doing the same jobs that adult volunteers do.
It’s wonderful to see them discover that they have a real and powerful role to play in impacting their world. That’s a lesson that many don’t learn until much later: that they, indeed, make the difference.
